Indoor air in a Northern California house is mostly outdoor air that has come inside, plus whatever the house itself adds. In smoke season the outdoor half changes character completely: fine particles small enough to pass straight through a standard furnace filter, carried on the same air that leaks around windows, through recessed lights and down the chimney whether you open anything or not. For the rest of the year the problem is more ordinary, dust, pollen, pet dander and cooking particulate, but it moves through the house by the same route.
That route is the useful thing, because it means the HVAC system is the lever. A central system already pulls the air of the whole house through one place several times an hour. Whether that place cleans the air or simply moves it is a choice about equipment and setup, and it is a far cheaper choice than sealing a house.

WHAT ACTUALLY GETS INTO A HOUSE HERE
Most households notice the symptoms long before they connect them to the air. The list below is the pattern we hear described most often on the phone, and the fixes for it are usually straightforward.
Signs the House Is Losing the Air Quality Battle
- Allergy symptoms that ease when you leave the house and return within an hour of coming home.
- Dust returning within a day or two of cleaning, on every flat surface rather than in one room.
- A smell of smoke indoors during a wildfire event even with every window shut.
- One room that is always worse than the rest, which usually points at a return or a duct rather than at the air outside.
- A filter that looks grey within weeks of being changed, or a filter slot that does not close properly.
HOW AIRSTARS APPROACHES INDOOR AIR QUALITY
Air quality work goes wrong when somebody sells a box before understanding the house. A portable purifier in one room does very little for a house whose air changes several times an hour through gaps you cannot see. So the visit starts with the building and the system rather than with a product.
The recommendation: what to change, in what order, and what each step will and will not do. We would rather tell you that a filter upgrade solves most of it than sell you three things that do the work of one.
What the house is doing: where the complaints are, which rooms, which seasons, and whether anything changed. Allergy symptoms that stop when you leave the house point somewhere different from a smell that only appears when the heat runs.
The filter and the filter slot: what is fitted, whether the cabinet actually seals around it, and whether the system has the static pressure headroom for a better one. A high-grade filter in a leaky slot is mostly decorative, because air takes the easier path around it.
The return side: returns pulling from a garage, a crawl space or an attic are one of the most common causes of bad indoor air, and they are also one of the easiest to correct once found.
The blower and the system: whether it can run in circulation mode without heating or cooling, which is what turns the system into a whole-house air cleaner on a smoky day, and whether the ductwork leaks into unconditioned space.
The Three Levers That Actually Work
1. Filtration
The first lever is what the air passes through. A deeper media filter in a properly sealed cabinet removes far more than a one-inch panel filter and, because it has more surface area, it does so without choking the blower. Where the particle load is the main concern, higher-efficiency media or an electronic air cleaner in the return goes further. The limit is always static pressure: we check what the system can take before recommending anything, because a filter that starves the blower costs you a compressor eventually.
2. Infiltration and Pressure
The second lever is everything that does not come through the filter. Smoke does not wait at the front door. It arrives through the same gaps that let conditioned air out, and it arrives faster when the house is at negative pressure because a range hood or a dryer is running. Sealing duct leaks in attics and crawl spaces, and correcting returns that draw from unconditioned space, does more for smoke-season air than most purifiers do, and it lowers the heating and cooling load at the same time.
3. Ventilation and Humidity
The third lever is how fresh air gets in deliberately, and what the humidity does. A tight house needs controlled ventilation, and the point of controlling it is that you can shut it down when the air outside is bad and open it up when it is not. Humidity matters in the other direction: air that is too dry irritates airways in winter, and air that is too damp grows the things people are allergic to. Both are fixable with equipment that sits in the system rather than in a corner of a room.
GETTING A HOUSE READY BEFORE SMOKE SEASON
Smoke season arrives every year and it never arrives conveniently.
The work that helps is the work done before it starts, because during an event the good filters are out of stock and everybody calls on the same day. A visit in spring or early summer can put the right filter in, seal the cabinet so the filter is actually used, find the returns and duct leaks that are pulling outside air in, and set the thermostat up so the fan can run in circulation mode on its own. None of that is dramatic, and all of it is the difference between a house that feels breathable in September and one that does not.
What we check when preparing a house for smoke season:
Filter type, filter depth and whether the cabinet seals, plus a spare on the shelf before the season starts.
Return locations, duct leakage into attics, garages and crawl spaces, and any return pulling from unconditioned space.
Whether the system can circulate and filter without heating or cooling, and whether the thermostat is set up to let it.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY FAQS
Will an air purifier in one room fix the problem?
It will help that room while it runs. It does very little for the rest of the house, because the air moves between rooms faster than a single portable unit can clean it. Using the central system is the way to treat the whole house at once.
Can I just fit the thickest filter that will go in?
Not always. Filters restrict airflow, and a system with no static pressure headroom will starve the blower and eventually damage equipment. We measure before recommending, and where the system cannot take a better filter we say so and look at the cabinet and the ducts instead.
Does duct cleaning improve indoor air quality?
It addresses what is in the ducts, which is a different problem from what is entering the house. Where the ducts are genuinely dirty it helps, and we offer it, but on its own it will not keep smoke out. Filtration and sealing do more.
Can the system filter smoke without heating or cooling?
Yes, if the fan can be run in circulation mode and the filtration is up to it. Setting that up is part of the visit, and it is the single most useful thing most houses can do on a smoky day.
What filter upgrade do you recommend for wildfire smoke?
We look at what your system can move air through without straining the blower, then fit the highest-rated filter or media cabinet it can handle. Portable purifiers help in single rooms but do not treat the whole house.
Can you check my system for mold or musty smells?
Yes. We inspect the coil, drain pan, condensate line and accessible ductwork, which are the usual sources of musty smells, and recommend cleaning or repairs based on what we find.
